Hitler won many bloodless victories prior to the start of World War II on September 1, 1939. His goose stepping Wehrmacht marched first into the Rhineland on March 7, 1936. This was in clear violation of the Versailles Treaty that ended the First World War. The French, with the largest army in Europe, did not even whisper a protest. The Rhineland was taken without a shot being fired.
Two years later Austria was annexed to Germany by a rigged plebiscite. This occurred on March 12, 1938. Hitler, who was an Austrian, argued that these two German-speaking peoples should be united. The SS took care of the dissenters.
Then Hitler turned his attention to Czechoslovakia. The Sudetenland was a German-speaking part of Czechoslovakia. Hitler wanted the Sudetenland allegedly to protect the German minority from the Slovaks. France and Britain raised a feeble protest. Hitler suggested a four nation conference in the German city of Munich. Hitler invited his friend comic opera dictator Mussolini to represent Italy. The French and English were also invited by Herr Hitler. Hitler promised that if he was allowed to dismember Czechoslovakia it would be his last territorial request. Neville Chamberlain, the English Prime Minister persuaded the French to sign the Munich Pact on September 29, 1938. In today’s parlance Czechoslovakia was thrown under the bus. Chamberlain returned to London waving a white paper say he had obtained peace in our time.
In less than one year Poland was attacked and devoured by the German Blitzkrieg. Chamberlain wanted to trade peace for security, but he got neither. Instead his appeasement lit the largest conflagration in human history that burned up at least 40,000,000 men, women and children before the flames of war were extinguished. And Neville Chamberlain’s name was forever ignominiously linked with the word appeasement.
Winston Church often referred to World War II as the “unnecessary war”. If England and France had just shown a little spine perhaps Hitler could have been stopped. Perhaps millions of human lives could have been spared and untold agony prevented.
Today, there are many parallels between 1938 and 2012. Now instead of facing Germany there is an ascending Iran and a pan-Arabic movement orchestrated by the Muslim Brotherhood which some refer to as the Arab Spring but more correctly it is rapidly becoming the Arab Hell. Ahmadinejad (Mad A’Jad as he is referred to by the New York Post) is a budding Islamic Hitler. While denying the First Holocaust he is preparing a second nuclear holocaust for Israel. The Obama administration is abandoning our only and best ally in the region, Israel. Obama, like Chamberlain, believes he can trade peace for security. And like Chamberlain he will reap bloody war. When dictators promise to wipe Israel off the face of the earth for God’s sake believe them. If we had confronted Iran forcefully three or fours years ago we could have stopped the problem with minimal loss of life.
Israel will soon act to protect their national security. They will strike in a way that is totally unanticipated. But they will have to endure the rage of Hamas and Hezbollah. Hopefully Israel has not waited too long to attack. We may be on the very verge of World War III.
The lights are going out all over the world.
